No matter what I ate and did in terms of exercise, I couldn't lose a pound. I had thyroid issues and liver issues and needed to lose 40 lbs. I always made good food choices (no fried foods, cream sauces, fast food, etc.), but still weight only went up, not down. I went for my annual physical and my Doctor told me that my sugar level was that of a diabetic. Numerous family members have diabetes and I knew I did not want to have that. I tried for about 3 months to eat better and only lost 3 pounds. I decided I had to do something more than slightly cutting back on sweets. After many years of being overweight with high blood pressure and more recently diabetes, my doctor, Moshe Kedan, suggested that I go to Bee Well. I made an appointment with Liat and on June 1, 2014, began to follow her suggestions as to what food to eat.
I started by throwing everything away in my refrigerator and stocking only the foods that she had specified. Based on my home scales, I started out at 268 pounds and with several months of strictly following her diet, I got down to 205 pounds. I wish I had done this many years ago as I now feel great about myself and wear clothes that I would not previously have worn. I also now have more energy and can move around like I was able to do in my teens. I originally wore 42 size pants and XL size shirts. I now wear 36 size pants and large shirts. I have also been able to discontinue several of my high blood pressure and diabetes medications. I just retired at the end of July and the medicine cost savings also helps.
My goal is to get below 200 pounds just to say I broke the 200-pound barrier.

You need to take another statin to control your cholesterol levels. This was the answer to my ongoing effort to keep my fluctuating cholesterol levels in check. Furthermore, I had been experiencing joint pain, particularly in my legs. My energy levels fluctuated throughout the day, my sleeping patterns were erratic and I was gaining weight despite my best efforts to eat "better”.
Within four months of following Ms. Golan’s recommendations, I’ve lost about 30 pounds, my percentage of body fat decreased about seven percentage points to 19.9, I’ve lost about five pounds of venereal fat, and I actually gained muscle mass. I no longer have joint pain. I leap out of bed rather than struggle up because of pain and stiffness. My energy levels have normalized – maintaining a consistent energy level with no energy crashes. When I first came to Liat, I was trying to do an unworkable crash diet to handle a physical situation. I was losing weight no matter how much I ate. Liat suggested some changes and I immediately started gaining weight, muscle, and bone, not fat, and gained 10 pounds over a short period of time. Since then, I've met with her several more times, and each time I got good results from what she told me. One major, long-term situation she helped me handle was dehydration. I wasn't aware I had any problem with dehydration, but once I started to drink the amount of water she suggested, I handled the dehydration to the point where I can now run more than twice as far as before, and not get tired or winded doing it. I lost weight. I don't feel bloated. I started having more energy and even my breathing got better!
I went for my regular checkup and blood work. The blood work showed I had Diabetes 2. I really believed this was a mistake so asked my doctor to do an A1C just to make sure there was no mistake. The test came back and yes I had Diabetes 2. The doctor was going to start me on medication but I asked him if I could try changing my diet first. He said, "I will give you two months then we will retest you, if you still are in the Diabetic range we will have to put you on medication." I found Liat and set up an appointment.
Liat is my hero. She got me on a healthy diet, gave me great recipes I could eat and liked. She also taught me about label reading.
The first week was hard because I had to give up all the things I love, chocolate, pasta, bread & all carbs. After the first week, I started to realize I was no longer craving the sugar, bread, pasta and carbs that I used to. I lost weight, did not feel bloated, I started having more energy and even my breathing got better, was not using my asthma inhaler as much. I realized I had overcome the fear and had beat the Diabetes with diet. I now feel better and will share what I have learned with my husband's family next summer.

Before I started the Bee Well Nutrition program I had several issues to deal with. My blood pressure was up and my weight was at least 30-40 pounds over what it should be. I was having joint problems with my knees because of the extra weight I was carrying. I had tried a few trainers who offered nutrition advice but the advice was very general in nature and not very specific in regards to eating and diet plans. I was working out 6-7 days each week for over a year, swimming 30 minutes a day and not losing an ounce of weight. I thought I was eating the right foods but later found out what I was doing was all wrong. I was also getting advice from the internet but again it was very general in nature and not specific to my needs. I was also having issues with my ears and sinus and overall not feeling very strong. I wasn't sleeping very well throughout the night. It was very frustrating to put in so much time working out and not losing any weight.
Since I have started working with Bee Well, things have really turned around. I am down 20 pounds the past 5 weeks. I am eating much healthier now and not starving myself as I did before to try and lose weight. My blood pressure is down and I am off the medication for it. My ears have cleared up and I sleep right through the night. I tell everyone who asks me about my weight loss the benefits that going to you did (and still does) for me. I will go to the store and read labels and think, hmmmmm...what would Liat say about this. I have maintained my weight loss and although I have hit a plateau, I have at least been at a pretty consistent weight. I feel better, I have more energy and a much better outlook on life. My digestive issues are well managed and only reverted back to the Prilosec around Christmas time when we tend to overeat a little. I think the best thing you did for me was put my mind at ease about the different weight loss programs out there and how frustrated I was about others losing weight faster with physician-assisted programs, like Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem.

Before I started the Bee Well Nutrition program, I was always sick, felt tired, couldn't sleep well, was eating food that was not good for me; chips, pizza, Burger King, etc. I was exercising but couldn't lose weight and my periods were very irregular; one every 3 to 6 months. Now I feel great! I love the taste of foods I would not touch before. Peppers, onions, broccoli, fish, etc. I do not have any cravings for junk food at all. I exercise regularly and enjoy it. I had been struggling to lose weight for over a year. I had some success, but I'm sure nothing that was a life changer. I've been overweight all of my life but recently decided I was done being unhealthy. I was eating nothing but fast food and pre-packaged meals for a few years. I thought I was doing really good when I started eating more of those Lean Cuisine and Weight Watchers meals. I still wasn't losing weight as quickly as I wanted and didn't want to eat microwaved meals the rest of my life. I was working out 6 days a week for at least an hour at a time. I was becoming obsessed with weight loss and working out but was always putting myself down.

Before I started the Bee Well Nutrition program, I was having difficulty losing weight from giving myself insulin for Type 1 Diabetes. Even though I felt I was eating well, my sugar levels were all over the place. Now my sugar is under control and I have lost weight. My experience with the program was overall very good. I specifically enjoyed the Nutrition component. Liat was terrific in her knowledge and method of dealing with people. She always made you feel comfortable, always tried to let you know the changes you should make without making you feel defensive. I learned some new things like eating fruit first before dinner so that your metabolism kicks in. Also, buying fresh uncut fruit rather than cut up because cut up fruit has lost some nutritional value. And of course, the big one hydrogenated stuff on the ingredients list of food -- bad stuff. I now look at things with the view of more health and value to my body. It was good.

I Have Lost Over 40 lbs!
"You're the poster child for death. You have high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, and you weigh 278 pounds. Even on medication, your cholesterol level is 255," stated my physician.
That day, I went home looked at my wife and kids and realized that I had better do something and do it quickly. I called and scheduled an appointment on my 49th birthday with Liat Golan, R.D.
Recognizing that I would need family support, my wife went with me for my first appointment and evaluation. After a few questions, it was obvious that I would eat just to eat. I loved food! Every morning I would go through a fast food drive-thru for a quick breakfast and then back through another fast food restaurant for a snack on the way home to hold me over until dinner.
Liat laid out a fairly simple plan for me to focus on "what to eat" rather than "what not to eat." There were no surprises, simply whole wheat grains, beans, vegetables, fruits, lean meats, dairy, and nuts. So, I went home that day with a commitment to eat a variety of foods and to write down everything I ate.
I started going grocery shopping (my wife had always gone before) and started to read labels. I started eating big salads for lunch. I ate fruits & vegetables. I started losing weight right away. I started taking the stairs every day rather than the elevator.
After just one month I went back to my doctor and my cholesterol dropped to 167. I knew then this was going to be a new way of life. I began to experiment with new foods and made a game out of finding the products with the most protein and most fiber that I could. However, I have not deprived myself of anything. I still eat out, I still have an occasional mixed drink and I still eat an occasional piece of cake. Just now everything is in moderation.
I can run up the stairs now at work and I am playing tennis three times a week. I have lost over forty pounds and I have a lot more energy. I never feel hungry. People are beginning to ask me what type of diet I am on. I always tell them that I am not on a diet; I am simply making healthy food choices. I still have more weight to lose and I would like to get off of the cholesterol and blood pressure medicine altogether. However, these are not my goals. Everyone reading this has lost weight before and knows the hardest thing is not losing the weight, but keeping it off. My goal is simply to eat healthy every day. If I mess up one meal, I can still eat healthy the next day and reach another goal.

I Don't Fear Carbs!

I have Lowered My Cholesterol and I Lost Weight Without Medications!
A couple of years ago, I began developing mysterious health issues which I never experienced before. I began to put on weight, I developed heart palpitations, I wasn't handling stress as well as I used to and I found that my endurance at work was diminishing. The remedy from my primary care physician was to place me on Lipitor.

I had a problem, a very big problem with food choices and over indulgence.
